The
Earlier Endeavour
MAMI
with support from the Goverment of Maharashtra hosted The Festival
of Films-Mumbai, (India's first ever'independent' film
festival). The first step had been taken towards forstering a climate
for quality cinema in Mumbai. And at last, the birthplace
of Indian cinema had a festival that it could call its own in 1997.
It indeed turned out to be a successful venture. 46
films from 24 countries including India were screened in the World
Cinema Section. Besides, of course, 32 landmark Indian
films- which are Mumbai's contribution to Indian cinema, were
screened to celebrate 50 years of Indian Independence. Add to that,
four thematic films on India made by Non-Resident Indians!
Screenings were followed by Chauraha, an interacitve tete-a-tete
between the audience and the filmmakers. International
recognition for the non-competitve festival came from FIPRESCI,
the international Federation of Film Critics. Two eminent
personalities of Indian Cinema. Dev Anand, Adoor Gopalkrishnan were
felicitated at the festival. A Lifetime Achievement
Award to Dev Anand, on whose contribution to Indian Cinema tomes
can be written. And a Special Award to Adoor Gopalkrishnan for completing
25years of commited film-making on his own terms.
